Modern supercomputers

Scientists from Moscow State University under the direction of Professor Vladimir Kuklin managed to make, it would seem, impossible – to give a normal personal computer “superpowers” of a supercomputer and even surpass it in some way. A typical graphics processor coped with complex calculations in just 15 minutes and completely free of charge solved the most complicated task, which its more advanced “colleague” spends up to three days.

The most interesting thing is that the standard graphics processor (GPU) from Nvidia was used for calculations. Similar ones are used in home computers and in game consoles , they can be purchased in the store at a price of 300 to 500 dollars.

Modern GPUs use a multithreaded data processing scheme that allows them to cope with modern computer graphics. MSU scientists have taken advantage of this advantage in order to find out whether the “iron” of the consumer level will be able to compare in calculations with supercomputers.

To the advantages of technology can be attributed a huge amount of necessary and affordable software. It remains to be wondered why specialists in the West are not interested in this, and they still prefer working on expensive supercomputers.

According to Vladimir Kuklin, he and his colleagues have achieved a unique performance for a conventional PC. The technology developed by them calculates 260 million of the most complicated double integrals in just 3 seconds. Such computational power will make research more accessible in complex fields of science, including quantum mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics.
